The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
